How To Find Contentment!
CONTENTMENT WITH YOUR JOB
Working at a job that you don’t like is not fun. Whether it be mundane or crazily chaotic, if you don’t like it, it can become miserable. How do you serve and love God at a job where you may possibly be the only or one of the few Christian there?
You are supposed to do all things for the glory of God. Yet, you don’t want to even be there. God calls you to be content where you are. Even at a job you may hate, you are still called to represent Him.
WORKING WITH UNBELIEVERS
You may be working with unbelievers that just make it hard to work. They are not considerate of you. They only think about themselves. They might not even care about doing a good job. They are there just for the paycheck and will do as little as needed for it. It is difficult not to be influenced by people you spend possibly 8 hours with every day.
You want to be a light to them is in your heart, but they might care less of what you have to share. This can be so discouraging and makes going to work such a chore. Even in this work environment, you can be a light. It really does come down to loving God.
Sharing Christ at your job doesn’t necessarily mean telling them Genesis- Revelation. It can be your character. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden (Matthew 5:14).” Can you manage your temper? Are you kind to them when they are not to you?
It is easy to be nice to someone when they are to you. It is Christ-like to be warm and positive when people are being rude. Intentionally seek to love God by loving those you’d rather not even talk to. “If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them" Luke 6:32.
NOT YOUR PASSION
It could be that passion keeps you from happily walking through your work doors every morning. It is just something that gets the bills paid. You don’t actually like it. You just need it. You may not know what your passion is, but you know it’s not that! Possibly you do know your passion, and you feel stuck.
This is a testing season for you. Will you serve Him wherever He places you? You may not see how this fits into the grander story, but it does. It is one of those diverse lines that makes up a beautiful picture that will be revealed one day.
Love God by showing up each day with a positive attitude. Stand out from the unbelievers. Your work should be different then there's because you ultimately work for the King of Kings, not your boss there. "Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people (Ephesians 6:7).”
Don’t compare yourself to others who seem to be walking ‘in their purpose.’ You are walking in your purpose in this season! This is what God has called you to do. It may not be your passion, but it is your calling for now. You might as well learn to please God in the way you view it. Past the test!
CONTENTMENT
Contentment is not that you are settling for less. It is not even you pretending to like your job when you don’t. That is called denial. God calls you to the truth. It is okay to not like your job. It is not okay to complain and accuse God of doing you wrong while blessing others.
Contentment is trusting God. It is you believing He does all thing well. "But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you" Matthew 6:33.
When you choose to be content, you are saying yes to His will. Contentment is not a feeling. It is not a great happiness or excitement. It is, 'yes Lord!' You are trusting Him with your life, even when you don’t like it. That is loving Him over yourself! Choosing contentment is glorifying to God. It pleases Him.
HOPE
There is nothing wrong with waiting in hope. God actually tells us to do so. If you believe God’s future plan is to move you, wait expectantly. Let that spur you on to continue.
This does not contradict contentment. You can trust God with where you are now while trusting God with where you will be in the future. It is all trust! "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths (Proverbs 3:5-6).”
Show up every day, knowing God is in control and will move you when it is time. He is pruning you and making you more like Christ where you are right now. He is developing patience, gentleness, self-control, and the other fruits of the Spirit. It is not wasted. Wait in Hope, believing even this has a purpose.
REPRESENT GOD
I hope you are encouraged to serve God during this season in practical ways. It is okay to not like your job. It is not okay to be unlike Christ at a job that you don’t like. Whether you recognize it or not, you are being watched. People are seeing how you react. Some may even try to get a reaction from you.
Be a light. Remain humble and love them like Christ loves you. You never know what God will do with how you have performed on this job. Love God, by loving them. "Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God" 2 Corinthians 5:20.
